Tyler, Texas, Tennis and Swim Club

When you have a pool bordering on 35 years old you’ve got to start somewhere to improve and modernize the pool. This private club in Tyler, Texas needed to spruce up its pool which had very little to offer smaller children and not much in the way of modern aquatic entertainment. Club member and Park Consultant Mark Spencer of MHS Planning and Design, Tyler, recommended the club hire The Brannon Corporation, also of Tyler, because its experience in swimming pools not just in Tyler but regionally in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico.

The idea initially was to “chop off” the shallow end of the L-shaped pool (a favorite shape for the ‘60s and ‘70s. But, what the club found out, was that there were three layers of plaster built up over the years, most of which was now delaminating. In addition, the entire physical plant (filters and pumps) were too small and had pretty much served out their useful lives.

The Brannon Corporation consultants including engineers TerryBrannon and Bryan Ziegler suggested a zero depth entry with fountains for various ages. Granular rubber surfacing would be installed down to about two foot depth and then the pool would be hammered clean and replastered. Coping was repaired as was tile. The club got a new Nemato fiberglass horizontal filter and new pumps to boot. Because the old plumbing system did not meet current codes, the consultants added a new supplemental main drain and trench drains to increase turnover rate.

Added area amounted to 1,635 s.f. of new deck, 1,223 s.f. of water surface and 12,250 new gallons of pool volume. The final pool volume became 245,545 gallons and the final pool water surface area just over 7,000 s.f.

Pool contractor for this project was Sunbelt Pools of Plano, Texas (www.sunbeltpools.com) who completed all the work for $273,417. The pool opened on schedule May 17, 2003.

New features include the Raindrop Tumblebuckets, Star Jet Cluster and TeeCup fountains from Raindrop Products (www.rain-drop.com).
